WOW, I can read many four letter words, but what about all those other tricky words? Did you know that q has a best friend, every syllable has a vowel, words like floss follow the “floss rule”, that letter R is very bossy and that vowels work in teams? In this group based on Orton Gillingham practices my friends will dive into more complicated word patterns through games, word challenges, written expression and picture books all while increasing vocabulary and gaining reading accuracy and fluency. By gaining confidence in word decoding, students will be able to read more complex texts and focus more easily on language comprehension and other higher order reading comprehension skills. Students will participate in reading extension activities to include story element maps, creative writing and graphic organizers. They will become strong decoders who can read with a purpose, build vocabulary and increase their verbal reasoning skills.

This group focuses on nature-based ecology and environmental biology with additional lessons in natural history and nature journaling. Every lesson is structured through an environmental education framework and is intended to take place outside (weather permitting) or through hands-on indoor activities. Tree Huggers will use observational and critical thinking skills to apply environmental knowledge in real-world scientific ways. This age group will learn how people study nature, what they can learn about nature, and who can study nature (hint: everyone)! Let's get close with our world around us with Ms. Abby, our "naturalist-in-residence".
