Every lesson is structured through an environmental education framework and is intended to take place outside (weather permitting) or through hands-on indoor activities. Budding Naturalists will focus on curiosity about the why. As we explore, we will look deeper into why leaves are green, why many insects lay eggs in water, why animals hibernate, and more! Let's get close with our world around us with Ms. Emma, our "naturalist-in-residence".

This class uses an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading.  Orton-Gillingham is a powerful research-based approach to reading and spelling that is language-based, multi-sensory, sequential, incremental, and cumulative. Your child will receive targeted instruction in the areas of phonics, decoding, spelling, listening, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills.  We will begin the year with a review of foundational reading and spelling patterns.  Then we will move into morphology.  Morphology is the study of words and how they are formed and used.  We will study prefixes, suffixes, root words, and their meanings.  The study of morphology is an essential practice for all students, especially those with dyslexia, and research shows that students who received morphology instruction significantly increased comprehension and spelling skills.  We will learn all of these important skills in a safe learning environment full of confidence-building activities and fun games.  A portion of each class will also focus on reading dyslexia-friendly chapter books and applying literary strategies. These books are specially designed and formatted to address some of the common barriers to reading. Please send your child with water, a snack, and a camping chair for reading OUTSIDE.
