Calling all muggles!  Come and explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! Muggles and Magic is an engaging and hands-on reading and science club for Harry Potter fans in grades 5-8.  Students will strengthen their vocabulary skills and reading comprehension using data-driven reading strategies and other literary elements. This will be done through rich discussions and creative projects such as writing a Wizarding newspaper and creating their own spell book to complete a study of Latin and word roots. We will also explore the science behind Hogwarts classes such as Herbology, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, and Transfiguration. In Herbology, students will study plants with a magical twist. Dissecting a flower, studying the life cycle of a plant, and creating a field guide of herbs are some of the fun projects we will do in this class. Bring your camping chair for reading outside and be prepared to be sorted into your rightful Hogwarts house by the sorting hat.  We will start off the year with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

This class uses an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading.  Orton-Gillingham is a powerful research-based approach to reading and spelling that is language-based, multi-sensory, sequential, incremental, and cumulative. Your child will receive targeted instruction in the areas of phonics, decoding, spelling, listening, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills.  We will begin the year with a review of foundational reading and spelling patterns.  Then we will move into morphology.  Morphology is the study of words and how they are formed and used.  We will study prefixes, suffixes, root words, and their meanings.  The study of morphology is an essential practice for all students, especially those with dyslexia, and research shows that students who received morphology instruction significantly increased comprehension and spelling skills.  We will learn all of these important skills in a safe learning environment full of confidence-building activities and fun games.  A portion of each class will also focus on reading dyslexia-friendly chapter books and applying literary strategies. These books are specially designed and formatted to address some of the common barriers to reading. Please send your child with water, a snack, and a camping chair for reading OUTSIDE.

Are you excited to learn how to read? My friends will grow deep foundational skills in the targeted concepts of print, rhyme recognition, completion and production, learning letter names and sounds and being able to isolate, blend and segment those sounds within 3 letter words. We'll also work to increase sight recognition of words we frequently use and learn to write the letters with appropriate formation. This group will focus heavily on the Orton Gillingham multi-sensory and repetitive approach to learning including activities like writing in sand, using play dough, picture sorts, building words with magnets and pounding the beats in syllables to develop strong phonemic awareness. We'll incorporate some fun letter craft activities and explore our new letters, sounds and familiar words through poetry, nursery rhymes, and picture books. This class will help students make sense of print around them and gain confidence as budding readers!
